I was born in Thessaloniki on 24 Deccember, 1951. I graduated from from the University of Thessaloniki with a degree in archaeology in June 1975. From October 1975 I continued my studies as a graduate student in classical archaeology, classical philology and ancient history at the University of Bonn and obtained my PhD in December 1979. My thesis supervisor was Prof. N. Himmelmann.
In 1984 I was appointed lecturer of classical archaeology at the University of Thessaloniki; in 1988 I became assistant professor, in 1993 associate professor and in 2000 full professor at the same University; professor emeritus since 2019. From 1984 to 2019 I taught various courses in classical archaeology both to undergraduate and to graduate students. The main subjects of my teaching were: ancient Greek sculpture, ancient Greek religion, Greek epigraphy and introduction to Greek and Roman archaeology. I supervised a number of PhD theses and participated in the supervising boards of several others in Greece, Switzerland (Universities of Lausanne and Basel) and France (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and Université de Nanterre). In the spring of 1997 I was invited to teach as visiting professor at the University of Perugia. In the spring of 2017 I was a visiting professor (directeur d’études invité) at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (IVe section) in Paris.
In the academic year 1990-91 I was a junior fellow at the Center of Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC. In 1991 and in 1999 I was a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung in Germany (Bonn). In spring semester of 2014 I was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ.
